April showers will bring May flowers as well as several movies to theaters and home video (all release dates are subject to change).
On the 4th, the stand-alone Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, directed by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla) is set between Star Wars: Episode III and Star Wars: Episode IV. Felicity Jones headlines as Jyn Erso while Mads Mikkelsen, Ben Mendelsohn, Diego Luna, Donny Yen, Jiang Wen, Riz Ahmed, Forest Whitaker, and Alan Tudyk also star.
Rogue will reach home video on disc after the initial home video digital release last month along the comedy Office Christmas Party and Episode VII star Adam Driver in the drama Paterson about a poet/bus driver.
Theaters will host three wide releases on the 7th. The PG-rated drama The Case for Christ is based on the Lee Strobel book. Mike Vogel, Erika Christensen (Traffic), Robert Forester, Frankie Faison and Faye Dunaway star in this film about an atheist/journalist trying to disprove the existence of God.
Morgan Freeman, Alan Alda, Michael Caine, Ann Margaret and the young Joey King (Ramona and Beezus) will star in the crime comedy Going in Style while the animated Smurfs: The Lost Village will feature the voice talents of Ariel Winter, Julia Roberts, Michelle Rodriguez, Joe Manganiello, Ellie Kemper, Rainn Wilson, Jack McBrayer and Gordon Ramsey as Baker.
The streaming service Netflix will release Disney’s The BFG on the 6th. This Steven Spielberg directed fantasy film stars Mark Rylance, new young star Ruby Barnhill, the talented Jemaine Clement (Moana) and Rebecca Hall.
On the 7th, Netflix will debut the original comedy Win It All about a man who find himself in a tough situation after opening a duffel bag he was entrusted with. Netflix will also debut Dawn of the Croods: Season 3.
The inspiring Oscar-nominated drama Hidden Figures will make a home video reveal on the 11th. Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monáe star as Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughn, and Mary Jackson, three African American women who made great strides in NASA’s Mercury and Apollo missions to space. Kevin Costner, Kirsten Dunst and Jim Parsons (TV’s The Big Bang Theory) also star.
Look for Lion, another inspiring Oscar-nominated biographical drama starring Dev Patel, Sunny Pawar, Nicole Kidman, Rooney Mara, This powerful story is based on the true story of Saroo Brierley who at 5 years old found himself lost in Calcutta, India.
Tangled: Before Ever After, Volume One includes the Disney Channel original movie that launched the new TV series Tangled: The Series plus it includes Rapunzel’s Journal. Mandy Moore (TV’s This is Us) and Zachary Levi (TV’s Chuck) returns as Rapunzel and Flynn Rider.
Other home video releases on the 11th will include The Story of God With Morgan Freeman, Season 2, the thriller The Bye Bye Man, the family sci-fi adventure Monster Trucks, The German comedy Toni Erdmann and the first three seasons of The Great British Baking Show.
On the 12th, the inspiring drama Gifted hits theaters in a limited release. Chris Evans (Captain America) stars as a single man raising a child prodigy, played by McKenna Grace. Jenny Slate and Octavia Spencer also star.
The eighth of ten planned Fast and Furious films will race into theaters on the 14th. The Fate of the Furious focuses on Dominic Toretto, played by Vin Diesel, and his surprising new alliance/betrayal to the team. The star studded cast also included Michelle Rodriguez, Dwayne Johnson, Kurt Russell, Jason Statham, Charlize Theron, Scott Eastwood, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris and Helen Mirren.
The animated adventure Spark: A Space Tail will also debut in theaters and will feature the voice talents of Patrick Stewart, Susan Sarandon, Hilary Swank and Jessica Biel.

The home video schedule on the 18th will be the action thriller Sleepless, M.Night Shyamalan’s horror/thriller Split and biography The Founder with Michael Keaton starring as Ray Kroc in his quest to franchise the now famous McDonald’s restaurants.
Theater releases on the 21st will feature the traditional Earth day documentary Born in China, which is rated G, plus the thriller Unforgettable that will focus on marital infidelity.
The Promise will feature a unique biographical story during the last days of the Ottoman Empire with stars Christian Bale, Oscar Isaac and Angela Sarafyan.
The action crime comedy Free Fire stars Brie Larson (Kong: Skull Island), Armie Hammer, Sharlto Copley and Cillian Murphy as gang rival characters in Boston during the late 70s.
On the 21st, Netflix will have the high quality magician drama The Prestige starring Hugh Jackman (Logan) and Christian Bale plus the fourth season of The Mr. Peabody & Sherman Show then will release the popular animated comedy The Secret Life of Pets and The Great British Baking Show: Masterclass: Season 1-3.
Viewers can see La La Land on home video on the 25th. This lively musical stars Ryan Gosling and Oscar winner Emma Stone as creative artists looking for stardom and love. The action/horror film Underworld: Blood Wars will also release as Kate Beckinsale and Theo James star.
Netflix will release the quality drama Disney’s Queen of Katwe about a young girl’s epic story about becoming a prominent chess champion. Madina Nalwanga headlines as Phiona while Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o stars as her mother Nakku and Oscar nominee David Oyelowo plays her coach Robert.
Wide theatrical releases on the 28th will feature The Circle based on the best selling book. Emma Watson (Beauty and the Beast) stars as Mae Holland who gets hired into a mysterious corporation lead by Eamon Bailey, played by Tom Hanks. Other co-stars include Karen Gillan (Guardians of the Galaxy), Patton Oswalt (Ratatouille) and the late Bill Paxton as Mae’s ailing father.
Other releases include the drama Sleight about a young street magician played by Jacob Latimore (Collateral Beauty, The Maze Runner) who faces challenges caring his little sister and the comedy How to Be a Latin Lover starring Eugenio Derbez (Miracles From Heaven), Salma Hayek, Rob Lowe, Kristen Bell and Michael Cera.
On the 30th, the April releases will end with Sofia the First: Season 3 on Netflix.
