Since your body constantly changes, the conditions and overall health of your eyes are also subject to change. If you keep aware of the conditions and/or changes of your eyes, you can make informed health decisions that will allow you to enjoy good eyesight.
How many times have you thought about all the hours of sleep you’ve lost over the years, then looked in the mirror to find unappealing dark circles and puffiness underneath your eyes? These conditions represent a common problem in general appearance and self-image, but you can take action.
Dark circles typically come from dilated blood vessels under the eyes. Some people are prone to this condition, so it’s harder for them to conceal it. Don’t take this condition too strongly because the skin under the eye is so thin that it shows darkness under many people’s eyes.
Puffiness under the eye can typically be attributed to fat and fluid. Fat usually causes puffiness simply from pushing the skin under your eye out more.
It’s important to have a lot of water and fluids in your diet to reduce puffiness under your eyes. Low amounts of fluid retention under your eyes can also be attributed to high amounts of salt in your diet and other health conditions. Cold applications of cucumber slices and chilled gel packs can help redistribute the fluid around your eye(s). Other products have varying effects, so purchase with caution.
When all else fails, careful applications of eye concealer and other makeup can hide circles and puffiness under your eye(s). Avoid using dark makeup when the ‘bags’ under your eyes are really dark.
Poor or low lighting can’t physically damage your eyes, but proper lighting will prevent eye fatigue and enhance activities like reading.
Like many health conditions, the key to solving problematic eye conditions is early detection. If your eyes are misaligned, seek treatment soon so you don’t develop poor vision.
Patches may be needed to teach the brain to give support to the weaker eyes instead of the stronger one. Different procedures, such as laser surgery, can also improve deteriorating eye conditions. It’s a common mistake to label children as learning disabled because of poor eyesight. Poor eyesight can be corrected through treatment and specific eye exercises.
Conditions, such as cataracts (a clouding of the lens inside your eye), present problems for many people. Symptoms of cataracts are blurring, sensitivity to light, and faded and/or yellow like colors. Today, technology has advanced cataract surgery to the point where some procedures take as little as 20 minutes.
If you experience any extraordinary situations concerning sight consult an eye doctor, (ophthalmologists usually have the most medical training).
Video Display Terminals (VDTs) will not harm your eyes, but they can cause strain and fatigue if viewed for long periods of time. Make sure to take constant breaks when viewing VDTs. Look at a stationary object to offset the fast-moving pixels. Shopping or any other activity where your eyes must quickly track many objects at the same time can cause similar eye strain/fatigue.
Watch television at a comfortable distance. Close distances will not cause permanent damage, but can again cause eye strain. People with nearsightedness must sit closer than normal to a screen so they can see the images better.
See an eye doctor if you have persistent problems with your eye sight and/or feel you need adjustments to your existing eyewear (glasses, contacts, etc.).
Wear sunglasses to block out hurtful UV rays and keep to a healthy diet, including fruits and vegetables, to keep good eyesight and even improve it.
