Preorders for Atari’s upcoming home video game console, the Atari VCS™ (formerly known as Ataribox) will begin on Wednesday, May 30 at 6 a.m. PT and 9 a.m. ET. Even if the limited-quantity early bird deal runs out for the general public, Atari has reserved units for a week so you can still pre-order. The VCS stands for video computer system, which is the same acronym Atari used for the Atari 2600 system before November 1982. The Atari VCS will have an open Linux operating system to let players play, create or port their own games and multimedia content.
Every Atari VCS will include the Atari Vault that includes over 100 classic games including Asteroids®, Centipede®, Breakout®, Missile Command®, Gravitar® and Yars’ Revenge®.
With a completely modern connected device, the new VCS was designed in California by Atari. The company is partnered with AMD, who provides the VCS custom processor with Radeon Graphics Technology. The Atari VCS platform will offer support for 4K resolution, HDR and 60FPS content, onboard and expandable storage options, dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0, as well as USB 3.0 support.
